With a name like OBC Kitchen you may have some misconceptions of what this place is all about. OBC stands for Old Bourbon County, and while this place has hands-down the best offering of bourbons anywhere around, it's not just a destination for those with a proclivity for Kentucky's proudest libation. The food here is terrific, as Leigh and I discovered recently after being invited to check out their new lunch service.
OBC is under the umbrella of Bluegrass Hospitality Group, the conglomerate of restaurants run by Brian McCarty and Bruce Drake which include Malone's, Drake's, Aqua Sushi, and Malone's Prime Events and Receptions. If you haven't dined at one of these places and you live in Central Kentucky, you are missing out. They've even branched out to other states: Alabama, Tennessee, and Indiana. So you really have no excuse. They do what their tag line suggests, "100% guest satisfaction, 100% of the time". Consistency is the name of the game for them and they do it well. OBC, however, takes things a little bit further by offering a truly unique dining experience.
What makes this place stand out, in my opinion, are the food pairings. They take what you know and love and raise it to the next delectable level. For instance, I had heard of this unique combo from several people so I knew immediately what appetizer I wanted to start with on our visit: bacon in a glass with a side of peanut butter. Now, I know what you're thinking: I like peanut butter, and I like bacon, but come on, the two together? No way! Well, yes, way! This little gem of a combo will have your taste buds tingling and you will be licking the sticky sweet goodness off of your fingers right there at the table and not caring who sees you! We followed that delicacy up with short rib mac 'n cheese and OBC's version of chicken 'n biscuits. Flat-out terrific! To wash it all down, we went with two of their Dr. Seuss inspired cocktails, the Fox in Socks and Cat in the Hat. They also offer craft beers and wine, too, so don't fret if you're not a bourbon or cocktail lover!
Let's be clear. If you are wanting the classic steak and potato dinner or sushi, visit Malone's. Terrific burgers and sweet potato fries? You can't go wrong with Harry's or Drake's. Planning a wedding rehearsal dinner or anniversary party? Malone's Prime Events and Receptions will have your guests thinking you are the cat's meow. But if you want to go on a culinary adventure, one that's centered around all things Kentucky and a chef-driven menu, then please, please, please get yourself a reservation at OBC, and tell them the KY Taste Buds sent you!
Added bonus: They now serve Sunday brunch!
